When Rick Hinderer Knives asked us to create a video that showcased the customization options for their high-end knives, we knew we had to match the craftsmanship of the product with visuals that were equally refined.
Their knives aren’t just tools, they’re deeply personal objects. Every detail, from the scales and clips to the screws and tabs, can be swapped out and tailored to the owner’s preferences. So our challenge was clear: make that modularity feel tactile, elegant, and exciting on screen.
Enter: The Cinema Robot
For this project, we tapped into one of our favorite tools, our cinema robot. It allowed us to program repeatable, precision-controlled camera moves so we could film the same knife with different parts… in exactly the same way every time.
Here’s how it worked:
- We filmed the knife from one angle using the robot’s precise move
- Then, we swapped out a part (like a new scale or clip)
- Repeated the exact same move again
- And did that process again and again for every customizable piece
Seamless in Post
Once in post-production, we layered each of those identical camera moves on top of one another in our editing software. Because every shot was mechanically precise, we were able to toggle between layers frame-by-frame, seamlessly switching out parts mid-motion without any visible cuts.
The result? A visually striking video that makes it look like the knife is transforming in real time, as if the components are swapping themselves out mid-shot.
Built with Purpose
This video isn’t just a visual flex. It reflects the attention to detail and mechanical precision that defines the Rick Hinderer Knives brand. We wanted viewers to feel that sense of control and custom capability, something both functional and deeply personal.
Because for the Hinderer audience, it’s not just about owning a knife. It’s about building one that feels like it’s theirs alone.
